Actor Michael Sheen infuriated flood victims yesterday by saying he was sick of hearing foreign aid should be diverted to help them.

As guest editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Sheen – best-known for his portrayals of Tony Blair – said that criticism of the £12billion annual foreign aid budget was an ‘ideological agenda’.

His comments came as stark images emerged of flood-hit residents battling to prevent further damage to their homes and businesses.

Today presenter Sarah Montague spoke to Sheen about flooding after those forced from their homes and businesses in Yorkshire and Lancashire questioned the use of British money abroad.

Sheen, 46, told listeners: ‘I think it’s a false argument, I don’t think it’s an either/or. I think it’s obviously from the newspapers you talk about – what’s known as the Right-wing Press.

‘I’m completely sick and I’m sure a lot of people are sick in this country of ideological agendas, using very real issues that affect ordinary people in this country and abroad as a political football.’

Keep fit no matter what your age

George 7 years old 

I have always thought it is important to keep fit no matter what your age. My parents started me in Judo some where round the age of 5 or 6, Judo and Sambo have been part of my life and at 65 I can not imagine not being involved. In my house as a youngster the talk was always about Judo and as I got older and better at my discipline I realised that just doing Judo or Sambo was not enough you had to do supplementary training. So I got involved in Weightlifting and found the explosive power of Olympic Weightlifting very important but I still need to run, do shuttle runs and stretch. Part of my training programme would bag work and skipping.

Part of the reason I got involved in Coaching was the realisation that not everyone could be a champion but everyone could keep fit and when I started Coaching in the 1970’s there was not many fat people about and in general young people were fit. That cannot be said of the youth today for whatever reason the majority are over weight and physically inactive or should I say lazy. Obviously I would like them to do Judo or Sambo but time change and many find my two sports to hard, which should not be an excuse not to keep fit. 

There are many ways to keep fit, each town has Fitness Gyms my brother ‘s Nobby’s Gym on Milton Regis playing fields allows youngsters access to the gym, you can take up a Team sport, get a cycle, go for a run or jog, even take walking. Keeping even moderately fit will aid your well-being and prolong your life. Remember “Do not leave till tomorrow what you can do toady”

I am lucky I have a small Gym in my Garden and I train a hour a day 5 days a week. 3 times cardio 2 times Weights, do the stairs and try get out for a walk at least twice a week  and when my 7 year old grandson comes round he has a go at the Bike, Rowing Machine and X Trainer I do not force him into regime and he tells me that to be good at his football he needs to be fit. At 7 he already understands the need to be fit, hopefully one day he will do a real sport but that will be his decision not mine. The important thing is he keeping fit, active and can still play on his tab,

I hope my little outburst has not been a lecture but shows my  concern about the Health and Fitness of our Nation

I see the scare mongering has started with regard to the EU Referendum John Major  this morning stated on Radio  4 that if we leave the following would happen

1)   Scotland would demand a referendum to leave the UK, which he considered a bad thing, as we would lose our status in the World. If they leave would that be such a bad thing for the rest of the UK I do not think so it would be bad for Scotland. Lose our World Influence I wonder what influence we have now under the EU surely by becoming an independent Country again we would gain influence remember we are still one of the richest countries in the World and have one of the best and affective Military

2)   If we left would France stop Immigrants coming form Calais he says NO. Well apart from the fact they are not doing a very good job now we do have the advantage of a thing called the English Channel plus if need be we could put troops at the Tunnel to stop entry if the border was more effective the that swarm of illegals would eventually melt away as there would no point staying as the border would be properly sealed. If this does not work it may pay to shut the tunnel for a period and go back to using ferries open up Zeebrugge and Ostend

3)   We would not save money on not paying  millions in memberships fees as the EU would put on Tariffs on entering Europe that may be true but we would also put tariffs on goods coming from EU. Plus are we to believe that EU Businesses will stop bring produce etc. to the UK and do you believe they will put up with tariffs because of EU interagency NO plus we will have the rest of the World to trade with. Our trade with the rest of world is now greater then it was 10 years ago but we are a Net Importer do you honestly believe exporters from the EU to GB will just give up when we import from Countries outside the EU?

4)   He then went on to say we would not retain our own sovereignty because the EU dictatorship would demand that we step inline with their edicts if we wanted to trade with them. If there is ever a reason to leave the EU is that one. Lets be practical once the UK leaves the EU it will become a country of low regulation and low government interference, countries will flock to be located here, that already happening because of the failure of the Euro, EU companies will want to be here a country without the interference of the EU.
